A quick blast of Wikipedia reveals that a mechanism of redshifts includes the expansion of the universe, which explains phenomenon like quasars and intergalactic gas clouds. It is apt; therefore, that Adam W. Flynn (under his .Redshifts guise) has created a daunting album of slow-shifting ambiance that evokes images of vast galaxies full of star clusters, interstellar clouds and dark matter.
The sleeve notes for this release reveal that no synths were used in the recording process. Immediately setting “I - VII” apart from the vast majority of ambient releases, Flynn incorporates effected electronic guitar and post-manipulated tones into his compositions. Strong fans oscillate the strings to give a slow-motion synth sound that still retains the qualities of the guitar. Flynn, in turn, played a series of improvised chord sequences continuously for over an hour, before breaking them down to seven movements (last track “Msvinhrs” was recorded out with the initial seven compositions).
The result is a rather grand sound that is simultaneously eerie and beautiful. Like the forgotten soundtracks to Solaris or Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, “I – VII” is a unique collection of lunar-charged soundscapes that require patience to absorb. With eight long tracks spanning well over an hour, those into quick-fix solutions need not apply here. .Redshifts is ambient music with a difference.
