Now We Are Ten is a more than ideal introduction to the Trunk catalogue for those interested but confused although converts have nothing much to learn - Now We Are Ten acts more as a showcase than an expansion of existing releases.

All aspects and angles of the Trunk label are on show, from the soundtrack genius of Basil Kirchin and Sven Libaeck to the sillier side of Jonny Trunk's tastes - "The Ladies Bra", "My Special Message".

Everything here sounds retro, Herbie Hancock's "Kiddush" is at once 70's musak and an advert jingle, the only discerning feature being the exotica vocals, evoking tiki torches and cocktails on bamboo lawn furniture.

Zeus is featured on Jonny's debut, The Inside Outside - released in 2004. It forms a hybrid of library music, found sounds and modern technology, recalling a less trinkety Ghost Box, a well developed sound, built from soundtrack samples and electronica.

Now We Are Ten an ideal place to begin an exploring the world that the crate-diggers inhabit without putting the hours in. Although it can be a bit daft, this is in the nature of Trunk records, and is meant to be laughed at. Compilations are a difficult business, but Trunk passes with flying colours.
