The pre-emptive single release from forthcoming album Strawberry Jam sees Animal Collective sticking to the glorious spaz-pop template encountered in Feels.
'Peacebone' erupts in myriad scattered electronics, settling after a brief manic outburst into an addictively pulsing beat and high-pitched treated vocals accompany slashed whip cracks that swell and burst wide open in a panoramic manic pop bridge.
B-side 'Safer' conjures up images of Plato's cave, of shadows dancing on walls amid piano and vocal echoes that bounce off deep sonic growls and cavernous rumbles. The track cruises through a number of distinct segments, building patterns and loops, growing more intense.
The chant "I'm alright if you're alright" grows steadily more strained; thickening with every new repetition before it snaps and breaks, releasing a dreamy stew of far-away parts, floating together then apart as if on a cloud.
'Peacebone' stands in stark contrast to early work encountered in the recently reissued Hollinndagain, in the period spent touring with Black Dice, and although much lauded in impressionable networks of Animal Collective fans, it just doesn't stand up to this squiffy pop heart that's been revealed in recent recordings.
