Built on an intro not a million miles form The Small Faces classic “All Or Nothing”, Gravenhurst’s Nick Talbot delivers the poignant “Trust”, the first single from forthcoming album “The Western Lands”
It’s an autobiographical tale detailing the break up of a relationship and the resulting hours searching for its cause, raking over past experiences and re-opening wounds. The corkscrewing guitars and Talbot’s ethereal vocal style seem to capture the gloom of this British Summer perfectly. When he sings “trust is a hard thing to come by these days”, you can almost hear his heart-breaking.
Warp doesn’t always get it right (yes I’m talking about Maximo Park) but when they do they get results like the haunting beauty of “Trust”. While Maximo Park are certainties, it is doubtful the clean radio edit version here will grace many station playlists, the lyrical content won’t sit right with the BBC decision makers. Now there's an injustice, if there ever was one.
