Do Arctic Monkeys even need to release singles anymore, now that every man, woman, child and dog in the country owns or has heard the youngster's latest long-player Favourite Worst Nightmare?
Apparently it seems so. Although far from being the strongest moment on their second album, Flourescent Adolescent screams for commercial success (just see the recent video of the quartet performing the song live on Johnathan Ross for further proof of its huge mainstream potential) making it an obvious choice of single.
But by now the band's sound has come a little predictable and this song is yet another paint-by-numbers Arctic Monkeys hit; the lyrics are typically tongue-in-cheek (see “Oh the boys a slag/ The best you’ve ever had”), the guitars are jangly and underpinned by driving bass, plus the melody, well would you expect anything less than instantly catchy?
But with such instant accessibility it's of little wonder why they went down so well at Glastonbury and have also managed to sell-out two huge outdoor events at Lancashire Country Cricket Ground later this month.
Whether Fluorescent Adolescent will expand the Monkeys' fanbase is debatable, maybe it was released simply as a reminder of just how great they are?
