The Go! Team - Grip Like A Vice
[Memphis Industries]

If anyone was expecting The Go! Team to really, well and truly, push out the boat on their comeback single Grip Like A Vice, then prepare to feel a sense of let-down.

However, should you be expecting another fantastic stew of electro and old school rhymes that share some of the same earth-shattering, kaleidoscopic flavours of their acclaimed first album Thunder, Lighting, Strike; then chances are you'll be giving the band's first taster of second long-player Proof Of Youth a massive thumbs up.

Remember the 2005 single Bottle Rocket? Well The Go! Team have decided to take the electro parts of said song and give it the full-length treatment, to make the best electro tune since the mid 80's.

Keeping to a hip hop aesthetic, Grip Like A Vice samples original female MCs Sha-Rock and Lisa Lee (from an old documentary) and overlays their lyrics with an assortment of live drums, breaks, vintage drum machines, as well as guitars and those fairground noises which popped up on more than occasion during the band's debut.

As great a single as this is, The Go! Team do lose points for playing it safe; Grip Like A Vice is pretty much what you'd expect the group to come out with and the song could almost have been hand-picked from any of the Streetsounds Electro Series (issues 1-14, obviously). But who knows, maybe they'll turn a generation of indie kids into the magic that was 80's hip hop electro.
