Vessels - Yuki
[Cuckundoo Records]

A new band for a new label and things are getting off to a great start for both Vessels (not to be confused with electronica artist Vessel) and Cuckundoo Records. This 7" offers two tracks of stunning post-rock and cinematic electronics.

Yuki is the standout of the two and hopefully a direction Vessels intend on pursuing in depth. A lost cousin to Kid A-era Radiohead or if you can remember that far back, Theboylucas. The track focuses around a gorgeous piano riff and spacey, dream-pop vocals, as gentle programmed beats sound muffled - as through emitting from the depths of an under water cave. It's epic, emotive and the kind of track to accompany frosty Winter nights.

So overwhelming is the lead track, it would be forgiving if b-side Forever The Optimist was stale in comparison. It isn't of course, but is so different to Yuki, it could be a different band altogether. The first drums and bass have a slight delay and stutter, almost venturing into the rhythmic layers of Battles, before the entire band launch into a charged stab of heavyweight post-rock.

Vessels have shown two utterly differing styles with this single and more importantly, they have excelled at both. Hopefully they have a ground-breaking album inside of them.
