There isn't a single person alive who hasn't heard this song by now, so what makes Standing In The Way Of Control so deserving of a reissue? Well thanks to the powers that be, The Gossip's most popular number is now sound-tracking the new E4 programme Skins, and with it also comes being used on every TV advert break imaginable.
Reissues can be ugly things and this "new" release is indifferent. Now don't get me wrong, I like The Gossip and enjoy their dance-floor aimed fusion of punk and funk, not to mention the overpowering vocals of front woman Beth Ditto. It's the kind of track that goes down well in the bedroom but gets everyone moving in the club, thanks to a tight rhythm section and the new-wave-meets-post-funk tendencies.
If you've never heard the band before, then Standing In The Way Of Control is the perfect starting point, but if you're already a fan then avoid - a batch of token remixes do not justify parting with hard-earned cash to re-purchase the single, no matter how good a song this is. I'm sure the high chart entry won't hurt album sales though.
