The Rollercoaster Project - Drone 1
[Dreamboat Records]

As the guitarist for colourful Wakefield outfit The Research, Johnny White can usually be found making neon-coated, DIY skewed pop as found on last year's Breakin' Up album. His solo material as The Rollercoaster Project however, couldn't be any more different, as the Drone 1 EP is three instrumental tracks of fuzz-electronics and sublime silicone symphonies.

Unlike a lot of sterile, crisp electronica which can sound too clinical more often than not, the EP's title has a strong earthy feel to it. Here, The Rollercoaster Project toys with both minimal instrumentation (just simple layers of synths) and creating strong emotions and organic, atmospheric soundscapes.

Algorar is more interesting in concept and theme, as White attempts to create a fusion of electronica and death metal, believe it or not. The results are not as harsh as you'd expect. Instead, the slaughterous vocals are kept locked away in the distance and the guitar feedback sounds more like a heavier shoegazing track, than an ear-piercing mess.

Drone 1 is a pretty unique record that embraces both experimentation and the use of different genres. The EP also has a charming naivety to it, that thankfully lacks the dullness of carefully-planned, slick electronica.
