Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity
[ATP Recordings]

Deerhoof's 'Friend Opportunity' touches a new high for a band that has always been consistent and always wonderfully off kilter.

Friend Opportunity begins with a thicker set of guitar-led instrumentation, also giving way to brass and synth at times. Tracks are fractal, seamlessly flipping out into maniacal guitar-fuelled explosions or halting and opening up pastel coloured gates to Willy Wonka's factory.

As it progresses the album tones down, moving from the metal-infused beginnings of +81 to the well-handled anonymous emotion encasing final ten minute epic, Look Away. Perfect Me is a crashing quiet-loud space-rock epic, with signature furious percussion giving way to Miyazaki's sugary toy-shop vocals.

Friend Opportunity is less transient than any other Deerhoof releases, but that's not to say that it's deep or meaningful. Deerhoof's transient nature has previously been their focal point, a clutching at spontaneity and immediacy in the short sharp blasts of sweet and sour on 'Reveille' or the naive nursery-school dynamic on 'Apple-O'.

Friend Opportunity keeps that penchant for muddled structure, for meaningless words and melody, but it loses that flimsy feeling, that feeling that it might slip through your fingers the moment it ends.
