Before they release their second album ‘Tones Of Town’, Sunderland outfit Field Music put out the unusual ‘A House Is Not A Home’. The intro sounds incredibly kitsch, even Eurovision, with its two-note riff and country-ish sliding guitar.
Vocalist David Brewis sounds uncannily like a young, innocent and cheerful Paul McCartney and the harmonies add to the friendly, harmless feel of the track. However, it is this innocence and carefree vibe which prevents this single from being taken seriously or displaying individuality.
The B-Side is a little more hopeful with some quirky Dandy Warhols style high pitched backing vocals. However, the band have taken their influences of Peter Gabriel and Roxy Music and, rather than producing something individual, come across as dated and unspectacular.
Despite its texture of sounds and some decent vocals, this song just doesn’t make enough impact and the primitive, almost silly sound simply fails to work in the band’s favour on this occasion.
