Panda Bear - Bros
[FatCat]

As a huge Animal Collective fan and their numerous colourful offshoots, anything related to the band gets me a little giddy to say the least. Serving as a prelude to Panda Bear's forthcoming next solo album (coming out in 2007), Bros is the latest vinyl instalment following on from previous single I'm Not / Comfy In Nautica.

Bros is similar in parts, namely down to the same droney-dance feel, to the aforementioned single. At 12 minutes in length, the song is a sprawling, mantra-induced masterpiece formed by two tracks merged into one and it's evident the sampling aesthetic of the piece leads back to Bear's other non-Animal Collective project, Jane.

The recording has a warm, rustic looseness about it that completely compliments the freeness of the skewed-folk-pop tendencies Bros offers. Panda Bear chants in an ethereal, quasi-Beach Boys style over a circling Summery riff of jangly percussion and a loop of acoustic guitars, which considering the influences, still retains a dance-feel.

A Terrestrial Tones remix on the reverse is based loosely around echoed vocal layers and subtle ambience, albeit with broken electronics thrown in. The single should appeal to fans of Animal Collective, although anyone expecting Young Prayer part 2, will be (pleasantly) shocked.
