Since breaking from the band almost a year ago, every man’s favourite excuse to see Ash, Charlotte Hatherley, puts out the mini-EP “Behave”, before the release of her second solo album, ‘The Deep Blue’ in March.
The springy opening is a cross between The Beatles Honey Pie, the wobbly Mr Soft advert and some Ashes To Ashes type distortion. Here Hatherley has chosen to turn down her thick-skinned guitar grinds and take a dreamier line with some floaty and demure vocals against a mirage of shimmering beats.
Third track “Cousteau” takes a similar route, with the cloudy ambient harmonies flaunting Hatherley’s vocal capabilities. “Mr. Ed” picks up the pace and serves to remind of Hatherley’s impressive guitar skills and that no matter how celestial or grown up her sound becomes, her ability to rock out is kept very close to the surface.
Charlotte Hatherley has finally shed her ‘Ash’s hot guitarist’ skin and found her vocation in the form of a sophisticated, enticing and independent sound. With music this grabbing and defiant, Hatherley will have no problems finding her niche on the currently female friendly Indie rock scene.
