Julian Fane - The Moon Is Gone
[Planet Mu]

Amazingly it's been two years since Julian Fane's debut album Special Forces came into our hands and yet the songwriter still remains somewhat of an unknown. But with the similar experimental nature of comeback single The Moon Is Gone, the chances of stardom seems somewhat unlikely.

The Moon Is Gone is another exploration into dream-like realms, drawing upon vast inflences like shoe-gazing, post-rock and electronica. Fane's vocals drift over a river of drifting, cavenous guitars before a crescendo of accelerated beats and epic Sigur Ros style soundscapes kicks in.

Turn to the b-side Rattle and the track is more electronic-based. Programmed beats, synths and scratchy Autechre effects provide a cold, industrial soundtrack for Fane's ethereal vocals. This track should appeal to fans of The Eraser by Thom Yorke - but it's important to note here, that Fane's style pre-dates the Radiohead star's solo offering by two years. It's just a shame which of the two will be seeing huge album sales.
