With the time for reflection approaching like a stranger down a dark alley, surely the stage is set for the wistful keyboard intro that leads you into Danny McNamara’s slow and stretching vocal perch. The opening radio edit of the title track is the snappiest on offer and cuts out the stretching guitar riff that brings out further the painstaking impact of the vocals, as is drawn out in the album version. It is trademark Embrace, but they always manage to do it with sincerity and attention to song-building detail.
A live and energetic, bass-heavy rush through ‘Contender’, is Embrace is mixing a bit of funk with pure Rock N’ Roll and you can feel the energy. However, it is the new song ‘Heart & Soul’ that really grabs you for its ambient intro that breaks out with the help of audience applause, into a keyboard spiked, strolling pop song that encapsulates the pondering and rhythmic side to this trend defying Yorkshire outfit.
