Another single release on White Rabbit for OC darling Imogen Heap, taken from her debut album Speak For Yourself, released earlier this year.
Headlock takes from what is fast becoming signature Imogen Heap, smooth synths and deep programming under her layered vocals, sweeping around the vocoder, twisting and repeating to thicken the soup of mesmerising electronic sound.
Heap’s magic is in the juxtaposition between her ultra feminine vocals and the masculinity of the heavy pitted bass and beats that sink to the pit of your stomach whilst the vocals fly overhead. This month she is also featured on ‘Plague Songs’, a 4AD compilation with a specially written track for each of the ten biblical plagues, Heap takes the locusts.
The high contrast remix on the b-side ups the tempo massively, turning poetics into breaks, adding some bitching bass and mashing up the vocals to muted fragments of sound, played out like a huge drum and bass classic.
