Like Arctic Monkeys, the potentially massive pop songstress Lily Allen has rapidly made a name for herself from sharing her early music on the internet. After feverish spreading of her demos via blogs and music sites, Allen was snapped up Parlophone imprint Regal.
Smile is the first single 'proper' for the London based youngster, who is already touted as the breakthrough artist of the year before even dropping a full length album. Much like her promising first limited release LDN, new song Smile is a laid-back pop offering with a setting of dusty pianos, hazy hip hop beats and a chilled-out reggae feel.
Lyrically Allen is in her trademark narrative form, telling a tale of torn-love with lyrics like: "When you first left me, I didn't know what to say...I'd never been on my own that way, just sat by myself all day", and the positive aftermath of getting over being hurt in lines like "At first when I see you cry, it makes me smile, yeh it makes me smile".
The single is pure pop fun and is sure to shoot Lily Allen into the top of the charts. Her genre-fusing debut album Alright, Still follows later this month, so expect amazing reviews and widespread coverage for this talented musician.
