James Figurine - Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake
[Monika]

DNTEL and Postal Service producer James Figurine lends himself to an A-list techno based album with classic ambient pop sensibilities. Vocal contributions are from Kings Of Convenience's Erlend Oye and Jenny Lewis with production from the ever present John Tejada.

All The Way To China centres around a shuddering bassline and harsh beats to lascerate vocals reminiscent of the Postal Service. You Again, however, is a disappointingly bland wish-wash of meandering electronics, squashed in between Pretend It's a Race and Apologies, which both go by what appears to be a winning formula of techno inspired beats and bass that serrate the edges of the quiet self-effacing vocals.

Despite its busy sound, Mistake... retains a lot of Figurine's original intention, a reaction to minimal techno in the form of the most stripped down 4/4 music he could muster. The result is an interestingly enjoyable album of deep white label bass and beats, crowded by light ambience and airy vocals. It's an unusual combination, but it just about works, so long as you've got the speakers to carry the bass
