Animal Collective - Grass (Reissue)
[FatCat]

Grass is the outstanding single from eccentric experimentalists Animal Collective, that was first released last year in the lead-up to their latest (and best) album yet, Feels.

Reissued here in its original state, the single comes backed with a second disc of films and promo videos. Lead track Grass is a colourful psychedelic mesh of skewed folk-pop, created in a world where vocals yelp and scream over heavy tribal beats and sudden chord changes.

Must Be Treeman is an ambient piece, with the Collective toying with strange samples and experimenting with vocal manipulation. Words become an instrument in themselves, with samples being repeated and stuttered, or stretched and sped-up to create something completely alien.

Fickle Cycle on the other hand, is typical of the band's recent trademark sound displayed in both Feels and Sung Tongs, where mantra vocals chant over heavy percussive rhythms, spiralling grooves and short stabs of electronic sounds.

Grass is everything the Animal Collective do best; flipping between care-free experimentation, to wonderfully hypnotic rhythmic exercises. UK fans can catch the band live this July.
