A gloriously hummed version of Abide With Me, done acapella, opens up Field Music's latest release. Then they country and Sunderland eastern it off into the single itself.
You're Not Supposed To (single version) is all Beatles strings and Madness piano lines behind gentle and laconic lyrics that question whether life is complete if you stick to the rules. It's fun, it's cheeky and it's right.
The radio edit goes for a funkier bassline and plays up the pedal steel and electric guitar. With the weight of their perfect debut album behind them, and the promise of the new, autobiographical release at the end of April, this single moves the game plan along slightly.
They're mates with Maximo Park and The Futureheads, but while Maximo Park are The Jam and Futureheads are annoying, Field Music are worldlier, wearier and wiser. They're quirky and do their own thing.
Apparently, that's something that you're not supposed to.
