Veering away from their usual driving, marching melodies, the second single from highly acclaimed album ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’ shows a more mellow Franz Ferdinand, less desperate to be the belles of the indie disco.
This quaintly melancholic, slow paced track has Franz Ferdinand stamped all over it. Singer Alex Kapranos’ trademark eerily sad yet confident vocal pelts through this relaxed, self-assured record, proving that shifting away from high energy doesn’t equal shattering cool.
On the contrary, ‘Walk Away’ is an achingly cool and painfully laid back song of lost love.
So, it might be Franz Ferdinand by numbers, but it works. Pushing all other ‘80s indie revival/art school bands onto the backburner, in typical Franz style, the emphasis is on style rather than melodies, and an edgy Kraftwerkesque bass line perfectly frames the record, which again justifies their crown as Kings of Britpop...round two.
