The Pipettes - Dirty Mind
[Memphis Industries]

Having graduated from the school of 'ette' along with New Yorkers The Noisettes and Sheffield upstarts The Motorettes, The Pipettes release 'Dirty Mind' their first single since signing to Memphis Industries.

The track opens with a jolly, rinky dink keyboard, reminiscent of the Divine Comedy circa 1996, with the lyrics "He's got a dirty mind, you just don’t know what you're gonna find." The members of this Brighton based trio, Becki, Rose and Gwenno endeavour to produce saccharine harmonies but regrettably they don’t reach the glittery vocal heights of say, The Chalets but with gimmicks such as matching dresses and choreographed hand movements, they seem to be attracting an audience.

The B side, 'Because it's Not Love' holds more promise than the title track, with a lovely doowop sway and a very placid guitar riff, provided by the ladies backing band, The Cassettes. Tragically, the harmonies are still pained and rather discord.

This kind of sugary, shimmery indie pop should be left to the professionals, like Belle & Sebastian and the utterly divine Camera Obscura, who require no polka dot dresses to wow the crowds.
