Heart rending self belief is crisply released by this Sheffield artist who is one of six children; it certainly shows that she is well practised at being heard and getting her point across. There is a haunting Nick Cave influence running from the single and the two B-sides that complement Helen’s sincere Beth Nielsen Chapman and Joan Baez soul filled vocals, helping to parade masterful wisdom.
Second track ‘Hazel Eyes’ is a longing, poetic number that builds slowly from a haunting and creeping piano accompaniment to juxtapose Helen’s lucid and calming style. This five minute tale of love, innocence and betrayal displays depth and cogency to leave you moved and slightly troubled. You don’t expect one with such subtlety and style to swipe out at human nature with such pungency, do you?
