While most of you will know Annie for the electro-pop of her Annimal album, she is also a respected DJ and this is her very first official mix CD. DJ Kicks throws up 17 of Annie's favourite tracks into one scintillating mix.
Beginning with a cute mash of reggae, synths and flutes courtesy of Toy's Rabbit Pushing Mower, DJ Kicks then embarks on a twisting journey that covers library music, electro, punk, funk, hip hop, pop and techno. Most of the names may be familiar to you already, with tracks from ESG, Alan Vega, Death From Above 1979, Le Tigre and Annie herself.
But the diversity of this music is the key to its irresistable qualities - vintage synth library music slides into the electro doo-wop punk of Alan Vega, the techno of Brundtland and Therson blends into the psychedelic funk and bongo percussion of Bumblebee Unlimited, while the early hip hop of Gucci Crew II morphs effortlessly into the electro-house of Datarock.
Although presenting such a wide spread of music genres, there's no difficulty involved and each track compliments the next. With a large focus on rhythm, this mix is perfect for both bedroom listening and the clubfloor. Recommended.
