Two long years since he released his two well-received mini albums, Aidan Smith finally returns with the Early As The Trees 7 track CD on new home Analogue Catalogue. The release is also a teaser for his first full length LP, Fancy Barrel, which will be donning our record players on October 17th.
A common misconception about the music of Aidan Smith, is he only writes chirpy acoustic songs with humorous lyrics and a novelty, throwaway value. In fact this mini album is all but that, fusing together everything from jazz inspired instrumentals, melancholic folk and a healthy dose of genre swopping.
Title track Early As The Trees is a piano led number with shuffly skiffle drums, hand claps, great melody and a childlike playfulness. Elsewhere we hear typewriters being used as percussion, jew's harp, flute, electric pianos and cheap synth doodlings, all of which couldn't help Smith shake off those lazy pigeonholes.
The wait was more than worth it.
