This is the first single in a new series of 7" 45 RPM singles from the UUAR label (UUnited Arts Records - an imprint of United Bamboo clothing). Rusty Santos is a Brooklyn based musician who is probably more recognised for his production work, especially with Animal Collective.
His last album The Heavens, was a 9 track LP loosely focused around the acoustic guitar. A Up High and Beloved Below however, couldn't be further from the avant-folk tendencies of The Heavens, with both based around a booming bassline and drum machines.
A Up High is a repetitive and drone driven post-techno track, full of un-Earthly sound effects, battered drum beats, pitch shifting vocals and percussion. Whilst Beloved Below on the flip is a Reggae tinged Summer anthem, with jangly guitars, Jamaican flavours and more Joe Meek dwarf vocals.
UUAR are rapidly becoming one of the most exciting and respected collectives around. With a handful of experimental and highly unique releases already behind them, expect great things from the label. Rusty Santos drops his new album before the end of the year.
