Why? - Sanddollars EP
[Anticon]

After last year's kaleidascopic and diverse debut solo album Oaklandazulasylum, Why? (multi-instrumentalist and Anticon supremo) releases a taster for his forthcoming second album, Elephant Eyelash.

Clocking in at a total of 8 tracks, Sanddollars could be considered more as a mini album than a promotional prelude for the new long-player. This time, Why? (Yoni Wolf) is backed by brother Josiah, guitarist Matt Meldon and Doug McDiarmid. It's this live band arrangement that sees Why?'s sound develop from his first recordings; instead of a cut 'n' paste lo fi aesthetic, the songs are now more traditionally composed, using solely live instruments instead of samples.

Tracks are now made of a verse, chorus, verse set up, with drums, keyboards, pianos and guitars that sound like Radiohead covering Pavement and being given the hip hop remix treatment.

Why? appears to be distancing himself from the bizarre and experimental notions usually associated with the Anticon name, and with it he's becoming an individual and fairly unique recording artist. Recommended and potentially EP of the month.
