Having been an extremely fanatical Pavement fan during my younger days (actually this has never stopped), their demise was obviously hard to take. However, there was a shining light at the end of the tunnel, and that was the prospect of solo work from Malkmus. These offerings though were for a large majority of people never really going to be good enough, and his last two solo LPs while managing to prove that he still had the ability to craft brilliantly quirky and influential music left me wanting just that little bit more.
Well I’m pleased to announce that the ‘little bit more’ has arrived in the shape of ‘Face the Truth’. As an LP it packs all the essential elements of a record connected to Stephen Malkmus, scatterings of country and folk influences, electronic knob twiddling and that trademark guitar and drum sound that works so well alongside his vocal delivery. Tracks like ‘Freeze the Saints’ and ‘No More Shoes’ proving that Malkmus can always shed the lo-fi image while still keeping totally true to himself, while ‘Post-Paint Boy’ is one for lazy days in the sun reflecting on lost love or what lies around the corner.
I have to admit that I’m just to much of a fan to really care to much about what anything Steve Malkmus produces is going to sound like, but please believe me if only this once, because this LP really is a must.
