Running the influential Expanding Records label between them, Ben Edwards and Paul Merritt (Stendec) are no strangers to releasing innovative and inspiring electronic music. Ben himself is a veteran electronic artist, with no less than 8 albums already behind him under the alias of Benge. So to presume the debut album from Stendec is going to be something of high quality, is a huge understatement.
A number of tracks contained within 'A Study Of 'And'', were recorded over different periods of time with many previously surfacing on various singles and ep's. This isn't to say the album lacks a main focus or direction, alternatively the 12 tracks flow effortlessly for a perfectly cohesive package. The fact they have come from different moments in time, bares little impact on the finished product.
With a definitive understanding of strong, emotive electronica and an eye for detail, Stendec's warm music is built by intricate arrangements and often minimalist use of sounds. Theirs is an approach where interesting noises and top-notch production, is as equally important as the use of lush melody. Even the harsh steel, industrialised artwork is a fitting indication of their precision and calculated approach to the piece of work.
A timeless classic in minimalist electronica, 'A Study Of 'And'' will go on to be name-dropped alongside the likes of Isan's 'Lucky Cat' and Arovane's 'Tides' in year's to come.
