The sampling of retro computer games is far from covering new ground and with too many goofy cut-em up albums already widely available, the novelty is fast becoming something of a dated gimmick.
In a typically Tigerbeat style, 'Manchurian' has too much quirky randomness to figure out what the hell is occurring, which can quickly make the listening experience annoying. Cartoon noises, cheap synths and cut-up vocals make-up pretty much 90% of the album, with obvious glitchy drum 'n' bass moments that would have Kid 606 & AFX grinning.
However, at times the tracks desperately lack in melody with Utabi attempting to justify things with intricate beats, rhythms and fierce sequencing talents. But only in 'Set Her Eyes Xochipilli' do we hear true possibilities of outstanding work; a down tempo number progressing into the realms of trip-hop, and yes the kitsch samples do work here.
'Manchurian Candy' has a lot of charm and humour but with so many annoying moments, it's not something that will often frequent your stereo.
