The first release for Manchester's Phush Consumables sees their key player DNCN unleash three of his trademark stormers. Strictly limited to DJ friendly 12" only, thankfully his hynpotic blend of house & electronica finally hits the shelves.
After a handful of remixes for the likes of Jello (Bola), Elbow & The Brothers With Different Mothers, DNCN's certainly proven his worth as a musician proper, 'Crayons' effortlessly overshadows any of his previous re-workings with ease, undoubtedly raising his profile for 2004.
The A-side being a live favourite from DNCN's ever expanding collection makes for an infectious introduction, at seven minutes long, it's a drug fuelled floor-filler of cut-up vocals & percussion. For a debut, it's certainly not lacking in the impact department.
Strangely, the B-sides are stronger than the title track. On the flip, 'Dubd' is a minimal offering with a menacing, broody bassline. It may take a simple direction, but the use of sparse percussive hits & beats is fairly interesting. Another killer is 'Onforthemorning', rapid drums and mashed-up melody make for excellent tuneage.
Shockingly limited so invest now, you may have a genuine future rarity on your hands. Certainly a contender for EP of the year, roll on the next one. Don't forget to check the interview section for a recent chat with DNCN.
