Fierce new EP on the outstanding Skam label, comes from the much hyped
Quinoline Yellow. Vinyl copy also comes with a free printed Paper Towel, for
some reason.
Incorporating most styles of IDM, 'Cyriack Parasol' is a true kaleidascope
of moods and production techniques. Take 'See14Across' for example, those
dark, orchestral moments of 'I Care Because You Do' mixed with the harshest
of beats - a combination which shouldn't go but works so beautifully. The
Aphex influence is one that runs through the whole EP whether hidden in the
background or the main lead.
Traces of every established IDM artist is scattered throughout, from the
Ambient Works synths to the random Squarepusher beats of 'Factungconceal'.
The Click 'n' Cuts influence is present on 'Gam Goy', try listening without
hearing Opiate's skittered percussion. With so many different twists and
genres of electronica mixed in, there's really nothing quite like it. The
only obvious number being 'Weekendrush', it's far too close to Aphex Twin's
'Wax The Nip' to warrant any credit.
One thing's for sure, Skam never fail to excite. Yet another magnificent
addition to their ever-expanding list of groundbreaking material. If there's
only one purchase this month, you know what it is.
