Boom Bip - From Left To Right EP
[Lex Records]

More of an allstars release rather than a solo EP, besides a new track by the man himself, we are treated to remixes by some of the industries finest producers - Venetian Snares, Boards Of Canada and the long absent cLOUDDEAD.

Bip's piece itself is ace, it could beat anything off 'Seed To Sun' and sounds so fresh and new it almost makes the album sound dated already. 'Left To Right' really is a beast of a tune - you will bow down and take it in. To simply dismiss Bip as a Hip Hop producer is lazy, there's loads of influences mixed in and it's fair to say there's going to be a number of people ripping off Bip's style over the coming years.

BOC's mix however, is a take on 'Last Walk Around Mirror Lake' from last year's album. 'Lake' is turned unrecognisable as a gentle acoustic guitar is met with lazy rusty beats - BOC have turned the track into one of their own classics. Really dreamy stuff contrasting beautifullly with the title track.

Venetian Snares cut is on the flip, it's a usual chop-em-up electronic affair with additional words by Buck 65. Part Squarepusher, part Cex, this is the most radically reworked piece on the EP. It stands out as the lead track and could be a single on it's own strength.

cLOUDDEAD's offering is a typically atmospheric piece with drums recorded a thousand miles away in the distance, besides it's production it's hardly ground-breaking stuff (by their standards). Still, it's better than most other stuff out there and will tide us over nicely until the next cLOUDDEAD album.

Not a weak track here or anything to fault, it really is that brilliantly put together. But, with such an excellent line up, were there any doubts it wouldn't be any good? Highly recommended release..oh and we should mention the artwork is lovely too.
