Mighty fine second album from the majesty of pick 'n' mix himself, the King Of Woolworths, in which the lo-fi sound that dogged his highly underrated debut has been dropped in favour of slick, beefy production and tighter song structures.
L'illustration is much more song-based, moving away from his earlier sound and introducing vocalists for the first time. French Library Music is an obvious influence (Eddie Warner & Delia Derbyshire both name dropped on the sleeve) as are indie darlings St Etienne, particular in 'Nuada', in which The Delgados Emma Pollock provides dreamy vocals in the summer's perfect pop anthem. 'Nuada' could also well be the radio-friendly unit shifter which takes KOW to the commercial success he deserves.
Other vocal contributions come from Dot Allison (Sell Me Back My Soul) and Cimacima (Evel Song). Both 'G-Plan' and '123' (Brillo's Beat) are classic Warner, wobbly bass, bouncy drums, keys and percussion. 'A12' is a wonderful intricate piano interlude, part Four Tet, which melts beautifully into 'This Is Radio Theydon', making a welcome return from last year's impressive EP and providing the perfect serene album closer.
All killer, no filler - a gorgeous album perfect for the summer.
