Lady Sovereign Reveals She Self Harmed

Lady Sovereign has discussed her split with former label Def Jam Records and also spoken about her depression.

The UK rapper - real name Louise Harman - was signed to the company in 2005 by Jay-Z (who was CEO at the time), and released her debut album 'Public Warning' towards the end of 2006.

In an interview with The Guardian, Sovereign explained how things started to fall apart: "I went on strike and stopped doing stuff, so Def Jam got the hump with me."

"I lost the plot a few times." Harman says about her lengthy touring in support of the record. "I was cutting myself and stupid things like that. I was tired."

"I felt like it was just push, push, push. I didn't have a chance to record any new stuff, it was the same old songs." Sovereign also revealed that she wasn't dropped by Def Jam, but the split was mutual on both sides.

She also says that she "was on anti-depressants for a bit" and one night took an overdose, which resulted in being taken to hospital by friends. "It was the lowest I've ever been in my life."

Lady Sovereign now has her own record label - Midget Records - and will release second album 'Jigsaw' on April 13. It was released in the US this week.
