Franz Ferdinand's Nick "Bored By All Guitar Music"

Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy has spoken of his band's change of direction on their third album 'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand'.

The band have spent the last 3 years working on the follow-up to 'You Could Have It So Much Better' and worked with several producers, including Erol Alkan and Girls Aloud production team Xenomania, as a means of changing their sound.

"I'm really bored by all the guitar music," McCarthy told The Times. "It's gone. It's finished. It's all over. There has to be something new again now. All these high-sounding guitars - that can't be it. On 'Tonight' we're embracing synthesizers, electronics."

Also in the interview, singer Alex Kapranos described the meaning of new single Ulysses, saying: "It's about loss of control and loving losing control. That's the whole Ulysses theme - he was lost at sea for ten years and rather than crying about it he went, 'Yes! I'm lost at sea! Let's have an adventure!'"

'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand' is released on January 26.
