Publishing company Bridgeport Music has filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Federal Court against Jay-Z for alleged copyright infringement.
The company claims the rapper used samples from work they own on Justify My Thug, a track on his 2003 release, The Black Album. They are seeking an undisclosed amount in damages.
In 2004, Bridgeport Music won a court decision stating that musicians should pay for every single sample included in a song. Since then, the publishing company has filed over 800 lawsuits against many different musicians.
They have previously managed to claim $4 million in damages due to a sample being used without permission in the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die. They even managed to halt sales of the album while the matter was being settled.
At this point, both parties have declined to comment on the lawsuit.
