Young People Should Wear Ear Plugs At Gigs & Clubs

Deafness charity RNID (the Royal National Institute For Deaf People) are warning music lovers who attend clubs and gigs that they could be ruining their hearing, due to the volumes of loud music played at these events.

A new survey carried out suggests that 90% of young people now show signs of hearing damage. As a result, the charity have launched a new campaign billed as "Do You Practise Safe Decks".

The campaign will include help from DJs, bands, radio stations, clubs and music venues, to raise awareness about the dangers to being exposed to loud music - which can lead to a risk of getting tinnitus.

Campaign manager Emma Harrison says on the RNID site: "If you're clubbing and you have to shout to be heard by someone two metres away, your hearing is at risk. Noise over 85 decibels – like a loud alarm clock, heavy traffic or a power drill at close range – will damage hearing over time, and there's no way to repair it."

Part of the campaign tries to encourage young people to wear earplugs when being exposed to loud music.
