Melted Mailbox is a new vinyl project, which aims to combine both visual and aural art. The series is a collection of music by various artists that will be delivered to the subscriber's home in bi-monthly installments.
Series One has just been revealed and will consist of seven one-sided 12" records. Besides music, the subscription also boasts hand-made artwork such as drawings and paintings, all housed inside a beautiful box.
So impressed by the project, we caught up with Melted Mailbox creator Matt to fill us in on the inspiration behind the series.
You've just started a mail-order vinyl club, entitled Melted Mailbox - what type of music can we expect to hear in the series?
The idea of the series is to expose experimental & psychedelic music of all types to experimental-minded fans. With Melted Mailbox I hope to bridge the gaps between the different subgenres - that is connect listeners of one style of psyche to some of the other styles available. I am a long time fan of psychedelic music. The artists I picked for the first series are artists that I love from all different branches of the experimental tree.
Altogether there are seven different artists involved, who are they and can you tell us something about each one?
They are all BRILLLLLLLIANT!
Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti: Unlike any artist on earth - fuses Kraut-weirdness with psyche / shortwave pop / Spector-clash / and brain-putty together. Seriously strange stuff all around (but somehow catchier than the coldest cold). He made the track for Melted on September 11th, 2001 - just knowing what was going through his mind on that day is worth the series alone.
Arrington de Dionyso: He is the frontman/brains behind Old Time Relijun on K Records - but his solo work leans towards avant-free jazz. He is a mind-blowing throat-singer & uses negative (absence of...) sound and guttural human noise to sound like a machine. Honestly I am blown away every time I am in his presence.
Carlos Giffoni: One of the most important names in the noise community. Carlos created the biggest 'extreme music' festival in existence: NO FUN FEST - his previous work is typically overtly abrasive, but his Melted Mailbox contribution is dreamy and gorgeous. All synth - all blissed-out. A new direction that warms your soul.
Dino Felipe: A true master of all styles. With his computer Mr. Felipe makes better pop / noise / and electronic music than just about anyone out there. His Melted contribution is a interspersed 7 track-mindfuck ranging from avant-garde to noise to pop to beats to IDM and back - this guy is really just perfect.
Keith Fullerton Whitman: Is also quite brilliant. I initially fell for his releases as Hrvatski but when I heard his drone work on Kranky Records I knew he was a true genius. His contribution is gorgeous - a guitar & computer piece in two parts that really gives me chills when I listen to it. Keith is very technical in his approach to music making so every little bit is clearly thought out & calculated. He seriously just plain rules.
OOO: Detroit-to-Miami electronic whiz. His normal output is technical drugged-out IDM. For Melted Mailbox he did an equally drugged-out live sound manipulation. It is beautiful and lush at points and menacingly psyche at others.
Sunroof!: One of the many amazing Matthew Bower projects! I told myself I wouldn't do the series unless Sunroof! was the first release. He makes some intense psychedelic noise. The track for Melted is one of the noisiest tracks released under the Sunroof! name. He is a fucking legend - he was in Skullflower! Ahhhhh. Sooo good!
Besides music, Melted Mailbox also boasts loads of extras like pantings, CDR's and prints - what's included exactly and who features on the CDR's etc?
This record club is designed for your ears, eyes & mind - that being said we want each subscriber to have AT LEAST one piece of unique hand-made art. The various contributors are from all over & are contributing drawings / paintings / audio (CDRs) / screens / text / spray-paint / glitter-prints / even some olive oil with chipotle paintings.
There will be CDR's from random contributors & and a special limited CDR pressing of a new Christmas Decorations album made for Melted Mailbox. We want the subscriber to have an onslaught of goodies to accompany their record buying experience. So there is great deal of goodies in the mailings. So there will be postcards & pins & random pieces of art thrown in. Basically - you are getting a random mountain of goodies - all of which you will add to the 'Series One' boxes (which will come in the first mailing.)
What inspired you to start the project and why did you make it subscription instead of the usual record store route?
Melted Mailbox is more of an art project than a record label. It is fun & exciting to get something in the mail. With this project we want to remind people that the nailbox is a friendly & wonderful thing. Melted Mailbox mailings will be full of surprises - and getting surprises in the mail is completely exciting (and rarely ever happens)!
As far as vinyl versus online-MP3 buying I think that in this digital music age - physical art is becoming less & less important. That is totally fucked up & the one true thing I find regrettable about MP3's. Packaging holds too much of a place in my heart to sell downloadable music.
For anyone wanting to join the club, when will the first records be sent out and how often do they come after that?
The mailing schedule is available on the site. Two LPs in each mailing with three mailings. The final mailing has three LPs. First mailing starts June 25th!
The first set of singles are released as part of Series 1 - what plans do you have for the next series and will it feature the same kind of music?
Series Two - will have the same concept - the same aim - so similarly it will bridge gaps between different audio & visual experimental worlds.
Ideally if you could choose any artists whatsoever to be included in a future series, who would you select?
Impossible to answer there is so much great music & so many artists we love. All I can say to answer that is keep watching melted - it will always feature amazing music that needs to be heard by ideal artists of ALL genres.
It would be amazing if Young Jeezy (the mainstream Atlanta-based rapper) embraced experimental music & recorded me a 15 - 18 minute psychedelic masterwork - that is ideal. Or maybe if Teenage Fanclub wrote a 15 - 18 minute dreamy-freakout and gave it to me. And if you know Christian Fennesz, ask him to hop onboard Melted.
A Jeff Mangum (from Neutral Milk Hotel) / Olivia Tremor reunion-improv piece would be cool. Might as well get some Destroyer, Frog Eyes, Hush Arbors, Skygreen Leopards, Capitol K, Acid Mothers Temple, Dead Meadow, Dump, ยต-ziq, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Glenn Branca, Prurient & Growing...
There are a bunch of ideals - I guess I was able to answer this after all. I could go on forever! Everyone in Series One is also a top choice - everyone picked was done because I love them!
