Chris Rose recently interviewed Bronze Age Fox vocalist Dominic Jones (and the occasional comment by drummer David Edwards). The band have just released the first in a series of 3 shaped vinyl singles, to be followed by a CD compilation later this year. You may already be familiar with their solo work elsewhere - Dominic resides under the solo alias of Dobosky (Static Caravan) and David behind the alias of Minotaur Shock (Melodic).
The second shaped single, 'Instrument Pt 1 / Forty Four' is released shortly on Bagatelle.
Hi guys, how's it going?
We are all very well thanks. How are you?
Your new single Dinosaur / Show Me Something More has just been released on triangle shaped vinyl (to be followed by 2 further shaped singles), how did the idea come about and are you pleased with the finished product? Was this purely to grab attention?
We aren't being purposely 'Wacky', we just wanted to make them desirable. Once we heard that a funny man in New Zealand made shapely records on a bonky lathe there was no other option. Our Ebay value is currently 15 quid. We once got disqualified from a battle of the bands (when we were 16) cos one of us wore a coat. That really cut deep. This is our way of exorcising those ghosts, like Sylvian.
Tell us a bit about how Bronze Age Fox was conceived. And how did you come up with the name, or is that a secret?
It was in a Geography lesson with our first drummer and good friend Tom 'Paddy' Palmer. The lesson was all about the Aswan Dam I think, which was all a bit heavy so we dreamt up this Crazy band called Bronze Age Fox. Why the name? It's a secret, I'll tell 'Parky' if he asks, but no one else (Mike Parkinson not Sarah Jessica Parker!!!)
Who would you consider to be your main influences? I can hear Prince, 70's rare groove, Pavement, electronica and thrash metal (just kidding about the last one)...
We are big fans of all of that; I didn't realise it showed. I suppose we have indie blood. Our hearts are Pop, heads are electronica and our feet are tapping along to Shalamar. Somewhere in our bones, there is Rock.
You've played live gigs recently, in your home town Bristol and Manchester. How did they go and what does the BAF live experience entail? I hear instrument swapping occurs regularly...also, any plans for a full scale tour?
David has a lovely wife and a baby boy called Todd so travelling to some stinky-bad-boozer in a windowless van driven by an ex-thief who's a possible mass murderer, one nice sound guy and 3 band mates who need a wee wee does not appeal to him. He's crazy! We actually love playing live. More than we think. Life is live and all that. We like to swap instruments because it makes us look all clever and grown up.
Coming from Bristol, are you proud of the cities musical heritage (Portishead, Massive Attack etc... ), or do you find people are quick to presume you are yet another trip-hop group?
Those bands are an inspiration to us. To be added to that list would be fine. I still get star-struck when I see Big ol' Daddy G in Sainsburys or Boots.
What are your favourite animals? hint: saying ape will score brownie points.. but fox is too darn obvious!
Well ok then, Ape! But my second favourite is a llama. There once was a circus on Hanham Common where we grew up. David and Williams' house was next to the common. A llama was tied to a stake right next to their garden gate and had eaten a perfect circle of grass as far as he could reach. Whenever they left the house they were spat at and called names by the angry llama.
Are there any plans to release an album at some stage? Or anything on CD?
Yes. After our 'Circle' single - The third in the series, We plan to release a CD including our 1st EP "Sunshine Made The Desert" and all the songs from the 3 Shaped Singles.
There are 2 brothers in the band (Dave and Will).. do you get on harmoniously or is there daily hair-tugging and eye-poking?
David: Since we became a rhythm section, our relationship has gone from strength to strength. We didn't talk to each other much before. Now we communicate without words. More than words.
How does Dom reach those high notes? Does he practise his scales every morning in the bathroom or is it just a natural talent?
I mix three parts Courvoisier with one part talent and hope for the best.
What music are you all digging at the moment? I'm especially fond of anything by Blackbeard and Yam Who..
The new album by Phoenix is a band favourite. I have been listening to Archer Prewitt's last one, Taylor Savvy, Kelis, Ratatat and Joe Meek. We've all been digging Prefab Sprout for the last few months. I just bought an album by Yes and immediately felt all bad inside.
And lastly - Dave, do you think people who enjoy your work as Minotaur Shock will also enjoy Bronze Age Fox's music?
David: They should do, the same principles are applied. The format of BAF songs is more user-friendly, but if people listen carefully they should pick up on the deliberate details. But they need to take it all with a pinch of salt. All of it.
Cheers for your time and good luck with everything!
Big thanks to you
