Superdead is the brilliant illustrator behind the ace Chips Records artwork, as well as playing bass for the mighty Bane Overlord. His debut exhibition takes place from January 30th until March 17th at Manchester's Contact Theatre.
Yo, how's it going?
Yo, I'm doing okay apart from the "spiraling debt".
Lame question but what made you get into illustrating?
I am incapable of doing anything else. I'm just doing what I've always done. Drawing monsters and girls when i should be concentrating in class.
Tell us about the exhibition...
Well, it's my first ever show and I've got 6 or 7 paintings for sale + I've also got some drawings and the skateboard deck I did to make up the difference. There's some slides projected on a wall and a video as well (hopefully). It was all Barney Doodlebug's idea so don't blame me if it sucks.
Your artwork is pretty unique, who / what has influenced your style?
Robert Willaims, Coop, Frank Kozik... I'm a sorry imitation of all these people. The list is endless. Fantagraphics... Mark Gonzales... Todd Schorr. Don't even get me started on music...
There's a 16 page comic you've created for the opening night, any plans to do a full length book?
I hope so. It's quite an achievement for me to actually finish a comic. I always give up after about 2 pages. Getting a comic published is part of my 'Watertight 5 Year Business Plan'. Kid Kilowatt with his own saturday morning cartoon series...
Rolf Harris or Tony Hart?
Rolf harris. I met him when I was a kid. He looks just like my dad.
Have you any interesting exhibitions or projects lined up for the future?
This year will be amazing. It has to be.
How is your band Bane Overlord going? (We're still waiting for the debut single!)
The single will hopefully be out by May, Stazi single is getting pressed as we speak, and I think Bane is next. I have a promo copy of Bane's single if you want it. It features a mushroom cloud and a choir. No, really.
And lastly... the clubnight you co-run (Chips With Everything) has recently closed it's doors for a sparkly make-over... can you shed any light on the new night?
I don't think I'm allowed to tell you. But it's gonna be at a new venue and bigger and better than ever. And a little less sweaty than before. The bands / guest DJ's that Rob ( Hyde ) + Lee ( Mann )have booked are fuckin' awesome.
