The Charlatans formed in by bass player Martin Blunt. Original vocalist Baz Ketley was replaced by Tim Burgess and the band were complete.

Their debut single came out in 1990, which was entitled Indian Rope. It was released by The Charlatans themselves, on their new self-run label, Dead Dead Good Records.

Their original keyboard player Rob Collins died in a car crash on July 22nd 1996, while The Charlatans were recording their Tellin' Stories album. He was replaced by current keyboard player Tony Rogers in 1998.

Due to another band from the 60's sharing the same name, The Charlatans are known as The Charlatans UK in America.
