James and Mike were on a golf course in Devon when the idea of forming a band dawned. James's ultimatum to Mike was "If I get this on the green then we're definitely forming a band!" James was successful. A similar bet was placed on the proceeding putt, which James also managed to hole. Joyce was formed and John and Ant followed as drummer and guitarist.
Casting aside the conventions of a traditional four piece band, Joyce use an electronic bass and a warm piano to create a unique sound. From catchy tunes to heartfelt ballads via foot-tapping dance, they have it all. They write songs and melodies that attract all but the coldest of listeners to their infectious indie-elec music. Their live sound has something for everyone with the songs drawing you in and leaving you wanting more. Their whole sound is a diverse mix of everything you've heard before but it sounds totally new and invigorating.
Joyce are currently gigging across the North West and highlights include slots at Manchester Academy 3 and The Cavern. Shortly after playing the Manchester 'In The City' festival, Joyce were a featured artist on the Myspace Music homepage alongside Oasis and Arcade Fire. At the moment they are looking for gigs further afield to expand their ever-growing fan base.
James, Mike, Ant and John are all based in the north west of England and are determined to go all the way. Aside from their live shows they are developing a back catalogue of professional quality recordings just waiting for a label to pick them up. They record in a studio in Chorley, which they have been renting for nearly a year now and also use to practice in. With strong reviews and an ever-expanding fan base, it is clear that we will be hearing a lot more from Joyce in the near future.
