Instead of university I became a deckchair attendent and then briefly flirted with becoming a zoo keeper at Blackpool Zoo. Neither came to pass and I moved to Manchester in 2000.

I began writing songs a couple of years later after relocating to Chorlton and passed a 3 song demo to my friend who was running Twisted Nerve Records, home to Badly Drawn Boy and Andy Votel. He liked it and they eventually released a demo of the first song I ever wrote (Hope I Don't Cry) as a part of the famous 'Twisted Nerve Singles Club' alongside such heroes of mine as Teenage Fanclub and Bobby Conn.

2004 was a busy year for me. I signed a deal with My Dad Recordings, now home to me and Jim Noir.

Somewhere along the way, I formed a band with a bunch of fellow Beatles, Beach Boys, Wilco and Love fans. In a moment of madness, Gareth volunteered his services late one night and was subsequently followed by Ollie on drums and Milo on bass. A day later, we loaded Garth's car with our equipment and headed to our rehearsal room on the moors."
