Capillary Action
For all intents and purposes, Capillary Action is Philadelphia native and Oberlin College junior Jonathan Pfeffer often accompanied by a revolving cast of collaborators.
The music is hard to describe in simple terms: Capillary Action's records dabble in melodic death metal rave-ups, fractured no wave-inspired crescendos, Latin rhythms, video game music, lounge jazz, new wave synths, and mathy melodies - sometimes all within the same song! Picture a Naked City without the bar-band leanings, a more eclectic version of Hella, or Fugazi, Boredoms, At The Gates, James Chance, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Godspeed You Black Emperor engaged in a vicious argument over a parking space and you might begin to scratch the surface of the sound being relayed on Fragments.
Capillary Action incorporate influences from all over the map: the meticulous nature of composers like Stockhausen, Stravinsky, Boulez, Xenakis, and Lionel Marchetti (particularly Marchetti's overwhelming attention to detail) the insistent melodies of Javanese Gamelan, the cultural misappropriation of Escape From Noise-area Negativland, the harsh, orchestrated noise of Japa-noise maestros Masonna and Merzbow, the blink-and-you'll-miss-it aesthetic of grindcore royalty Discordance Axis, and the cut-and-paste production styles of DJ Shadow and Prefuse 73 are all taken apart and put back together with Pfeffer's own unique spin on matters. The result is the aural equivalent of being devastated by a glitched-out tsunami and living to tell the tale.
With a full band in tow, Capillary Action's frenetic live show, which has often resulted in a variety of injuries, will be hitting a city near you in the coming months.
