Alfie have now split.

Numerous lazy journalists have dubbed Alfie the 'new Stone Roses', but Andy Votel's more romantic view of the band draws comparisons, aesthetically, to that of Krautrock legends Can.

Here we have classically trained musicians, working alongside street urchin style rock 'n' roll with great pop sensibilities, fronted by an extremely enigmatic and original slurring vocalist.

The actual Alfie sound is unique. One of organic sunshine-pop, skiffle-esque rhythms, with sweeping cellos, occasional brass and flutes and enough of that laddish northern cockiness to keep the lazy muso-hacks struggling to find a new pigeon hole (baggy! anyone?) to house their inimitable style.

The success of their debut LP saw high profile support slots with Badly Drawn Boy, Coldplay and Embrace (!?).

Is the outside world ready for such charming, hand crafted, experimental pop songs?
